Showing up is not enough. Just being present may be a requirement, but it’s not enough to actually make progress in most cases. What’s required for things to move forward, regardless of the thing you’re trying to do, is to put in the work. So how do you show up AND put in the work required? From what I can tell, the best way to make progress is to commit to doing the minimum amount of work every single day. Commit to writing that crappy sentence, or doing just two repetitions of an exercise. Walk around the block with your dog in the morning. Draw for 5 minutes every day. These small commitments often lead to larger action.
So how do you commit to do something every day? You put it in writing. Pen and paper, not just typed out on the computer. Here’s an example:
I [insert name here] will [do activity] at [time] every day.
That’s it, that’s all it takes to make a commitment. There are more harsh and compelling ways to do this, but this is by far the most effective across the largest number of people. So what’s you’re commitment? What’s the thing that you want to do or that you know you should do that would benefit from taking a couple of minutes to write down a simple commitment?
