Getting through meetings

Some days are great. You can focus on your work, get lost in the problem solving. The world melts away and it’s just you and your project. Then there are days when it’s nothing but interruptions and meetings. These days tend to really suck for me. The meetings are spaced just far enough apart that any kind of focused effort isn’t possible. Context switching is a minimum of 15 minutes, and with a new meeting starting 30 minutes after the end of the previous one I barely have time for a bathroom break. So how do you get through something like this? I’m tempted to say just give in and let the meetings take you, but I can’t do that. There’s almost always a set of small, easy tasks that can be done in between meetings. Copy changes and color updates are good candidates. I tend to work on these as much as possible. They are usually small enough to get done quickly and enough of them to seem like you accomplished something by the end of the day. It’s still not as good as working on the important things, but it’s absolutely better than nothing.
