Staying current in the field

One of the things I struggle with as a professional software developer is staying up to date with the most recent updates. I write primarily iOS applications. Many of the projects I work on have taken years to develop, so they depend on older technology. I’m not stuck writing Objective-C, but I am using a custom UI library that was developed before SwiftUI came out. I still haven’t learned SwiftUI because there isn’t any environmental advantage for learning it right now. If the bottom falls out and I need to find other employment it could be difficult given this (and probably other) gap in my knowledge. What can I do to mitigate this problem? Side projects? Side jobs?
